Regulation & Technology

Regulations, engineering, and what they enable. Powertrain architectures, aerodynamic envelopes, energy-deployment systems, balance-of-performance, the rulebook as a competitive surface. What changed, why it changed, what it actually does.

  1. MotoGP riders in a line through a fast corner, the leader at full lean in front of a packed grandstand, drawn in two-tone ink.

MotoGP's second grid turns Friday's deciding hour into 15 minutes, approved by a commission riders do not sit on

From 2027 a 15-minute Sprint Qualifying sets Saturday's grid and every rider runs Q1 for Sunday's. Four commission members approved it; Bagnaia says four riders agreed, Martin says riders were not asked.

  2. Two-tone hatched-ink illustration from a Formula 1 cockpit on a Baku street straight, the driver's gloved hands on a steering wheel whose display shows no safety car message, the halo pillar framing a car ahead, as marshals on a post beside the barrier wave a flag and hold up a board lettered SC.

Baku's marshals showed Safety Car boards with no Safety Car out, and the stewards still penalised Bortoleto for the yellow flags beside them

FIA Document 68 accepts that marshal posts between Turns 6 and 7 displayed "SC" boards while Race Control had deployed no Safety Car. It clears Gabriel Bortoleto of passing under a Safety Car and gives him 10 seconds for passing Sergio Perez under the waved yellow flags shown with the boards.

  3. Two-tone hatched-ink illustration of the No. 8 Toyota and the No. 36 Alpine Hypercars racing side by side on a wet Fuji Speedway straight, spray lifting from their tyres, with FIA World Endurance Championship boards, a pit entry sign, a marshal post and a packed grandstand beside the track and snow-capped Mount Fuji behind.

Toyota won its home six hours on tyres it did not change, by 0.591 seconds, after every qualifying session was cancelled

The #8 Toyota was running sixth when the final-hour Safety Car came out at Fuji, and had already been spun round. It stayed out on used rubber under the last Safety Car, took a short fuel load, and beat the #36 Alpine by 0.591 seconds. Hirakawa, Buemi and Hartley now lead the FIA World Endurance Championship.

  4. Two-tone hatched-ink illustration of two Formula 1 cars numbered 63 and 3 racing nose to nose down Baku's main straight, a marshal on a post above the barrier waving a flag over a packed, fenced grandstand, with the Flame Towers and the stone battlements of the old city behind.

Russell had Baku won from pole, and a last-lap yellow nearly handed it to Verstappen on the final straight

George Russell took pole, the win and the fastest lap at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, then lifted for a yellow on the final lap and had no turbo out of the last corner. He beat Max Verstappen by 0.196 seconds. Kimi Antonelli came from 16th to fifth and still lost 15 points of his lead.

  5. Two-tone hatched-ink illustration of a Monte Carlo pit garage with its roller shutter rolled up, a single-seater under a fitted cover on jack stands with its hubs bare, a rolling tool chest and a second covered assembly beside it, a large round clock high on the back wall, and the harbour's masts and shuttered apartment balconies across the track through the open front.

F1 adds a Grand Prix in 2027 and takes away five hours of practice. Ten Sprints are how.

The 2027 calendar runs 24 races against this year's 23, and 52 scheduled hours of free practice against this year's 57. Article B2.1.2 of the FIA's Sporting Regulations is the reason: a Sprint weekend carries one hour where a standard weekend carries three. Pre-season testing falls from eleven days to four in the same document.

  6. Two-tone hatched-ink illustration of a crowded paddock noticeboard, a pinned weekend timetable listing two qualifying sessions and three races beside a signed notice carrying a stack of signatures, a tyre-pressure strip, and tape and a box of pins on the shelf below.

A promoter's bulletin rewrote thirteen articles of the Formula 3 rulebook to run three races at Madrid. It left the article that pays for pole position exactly as it was.

Article 6.3 awards two points to the driver on pole "for the Feature Race", singular. The bulletin that created a second Feature Race amended everything from race count to tyre allocation and did not touch it. Both pole points were paid anyway, and Formula 2 has just promised the same arrangement at Baku.

  7. Two-tone hatched-ink illustration looking from the mouth of a pit lane entry down a completely deserted pit lane, garages and gantry on the left, with a line of race cars passing at speed on the circuit beyond the barrier without turning in.

Formula 1 has called two Virtual Safety Cars pivotal in two weeks, and the same car caused both. The one the marshals cleared faster did more damage.

Lance Stroll stopped at Monza and again at the Madring. The first neutralisation gave Kimi Antonelli a tyre offset he had to spend on an overtake. The second handed him the lead outright, because it ended before Lando Norris could complete a lap.

  8. Two-tone hatched-ink illustration of two Formula 1 cars seen from directly behind on a long straight, a Ferrari on the left and a McLaren on the right running side by side with daylight between them, heat haze off the tarmac and the straight converging toward a distant vanishing point under an empty sky.

Ferrari has spent its second ADUO engine. The rulebook that sets what it cost never uses the word.

Appendix C5 granted the permission. Article B8.2 of the Sporting Regulations sets what it costs, and the word upgrade appears nowhere in Section B's 98 pages. Ferrari spent the new specification at Monza, which put Leclerc and Hamilton on the fourth and last internal combustion engine either can take without a grid penalty. Vasseur left Monza saying the car is still missing pure power.

  9. Two-tone hatched-ink illustration in close macro of a heavily worn motorcycle knee slider resting on the crown of a brand-new racing slick still carrying its moulding nubs, with Michelin lettering curving into view on the sidewall.

Three riders crossed between MotoGP and WorldSBK in two days, all toward the tyre they already know. Two of the three announcements say so.

Pirelli takes MotoGP in 2027 and Michelin takes World Superbike. Jack Miller, Nicolo Bulega and Brad Binder each left a championship for the one adopting the tyre they have been racing on. Yamaha named that as an asset, Ducati named it as an aid, and BMW did not mention tyres at all.

  10. Two-tone hatched-ink illustration of a Formula 1 pit box seen from the pit wall, one Mercedes up on its jacks inside with helmeted mechanics fitting fresh tyres while the second car in identical livery passes the box in the pit lane without stopping on visibly worn tyres.

Mercedes built the thirty-place deficit, then spent a Virtual Safety Car undoing it. The 6 September weekend in numbers.

Antonelli won Monza from nineteenth on a grid penalty his own team's hardware earned, and Russell was handed the other answer under the same Safety Car. Toyota lost Lone Star Le Mans with ten minutes left. Duerksen swept Monza in Formula 2 from outside the title fight. The classification is still not final, and Audi said on Thursday it is going ahead.
